Determinados a tomar o controle de suas músicas, o Sweet dispensou Chinn e Chapman em 1974 e começou a compor suas próprias canções, então lançaram o LP Sweet Fanny Adams, que entrou para Top 30 da Inglaterra. O álbum com rock mais pesado Desolation Boulevard estourou com o hit "Fox on the Run", que alcançou a segunda posição nas paradas inglesas e a décima nos EUA. Seu próximos álbuns tinham singles menos orientados e mais coesos e mantinham o estilo glam rock de seus trabalhos anteriores; como resultado, a base de fãs da banda mudou de adolescentes instáveis para um público adulto mais culto.

Nos anos 70, o líder Brian Connolly deixou a banda e foi substituído pelo tecladista Gary Moberley. O novo grupo não era tão popular como no passado e, finalmente, se firmou em 1982. Porém, nos anos 80, houve algumas modificações no Sweet envolvendo alguns integrantes originais e outros novos. A reunião mais notável aconteceu em 1986, com o ex-vocalista do More, Mario Day, no vocal da banda.
Em 1992, houve um retorno do interesse pelo Sweet, quando a música "Ballroom Blitz" apareceu na trilha sonora de Wayne's World (O Mundo de Wayne) e também pelo fato de bandas pop de sucesso, como por exemplo o Material Issue, ter citado o Sweet como influência.
Infelizmente o líder da banda Brian Connolly estava sofrendo de uma doença muscular degenerativa e sua versão remodelada da banda Sweet, batizda de Brian Connolly's Sweet durou apenas poucos anos antes dele ficar totalmente debilitado. Em 1997, Connolly faleceu vítima de problemas no fígado, mas o guitarrista Andy Scott continuou com uma nova banda, chamada Andy Scott's Sweet, que foi uma atração popular nos eventos municipais e nos parques britânicos
